“Once upon a time…” – How Exit 244 got their name:(as told by Roger)
Choosing a name was tough, we took almost 3 months to settle on Exit 244 and it might have taken longer if it weren’t for the fact that we needed to have a name before we played our first show, which was opening for Unspoken. We tossed around so many names. Good names, bad names and some truly epic names. Of course the epic ones were all taken by other bands so we didn’t want to use those. It was really frustrating actually.
At the time Alex and I were both living in Millinocket, Maine and our exit number off I-95 was, yup, 244. Whenever we saw the sign (which was usually in the wee hours of the morning) we would comment on how much we liked that sign since it meant we were almost home. We kept saying that and then one night, and I don’t remember who said it, but one night on our way home from practice one of us said, “We should just name the band Exit 244.” We both laughed and didn’t give it too much thought until the next practice. While we were tossing names around we threw it out there and the other guys actually took it seriously!
The vision of the band has always been to use music to proclaim the gospel and to bring believers together in what we have in common through our music. Now the verse for the band is Acts 2:44 and since it was close to Exit 244 we decided to run it past 100 teenagers via Facebook to see what they said. We asked them which they liked better Acts 2:44 or Exit 244 as a band name. They all liked Exit 244 and that’s been the band’s name ever since!
